How can I prepare myself for dance classes?
I haven’t done dance in 2 years but I am starting back up again, and soon. I am going to go in a higher level class because I do not want to start all the way at the bottom again and because I am a quick learner and catch on to things quickly. I will be taking ballet, hip hop, tap, jazz, and modern. How can I prepare myself for these classes again?
Here’s how I would prepare myself. Stretch out for about 30 min. Do as many stretches as you can. If a stretch hurts you loosen up a little and try to hold it for as long as you can. This will help you with your flexibility which is a main part of dance. Also go on to www.justforkix.com they have TONS of information from videos showing you how to do different movements to dance games. Definitely check it out. Make up little combinations to your favorite songs for each type of dance class you are taking. You don’t have to know what all the moves are called because you will learn that in your class. Just have fun and dancing to one of your favorite songs will get you motivated! If you have any old dance recital DV D’s watch them. Make sure to watch all of the more advance numbers so you can get an idea of what to expect. I really hope I helped you. I took extra time to help answer this question because i was in the same position you were last year. Try your hardest every dance class and make sure you pay good attention to your instructor because they are the ones you will help you the most. If you have further questions don’t be afraid to go up to your coach or another person in your class who seems to be advanced. Have fun with your dance classes!

to be honest, theres nothing you really can do to prepare yourself before a class except for watching dance videos on youtube and getting excited. order your shoes and tights and leotards and dance wear if you havent already. other than that, theres nothing you can really do except for feeling excited and motivated. learn the studio ettiquite.

my opinion. classes teach you, so as long as you have your stuff you are pretty much prepared for the class.

First of all stretch in all directions legs and arms. Second make sure you have your dance clothes together. Run through some of the basic moves used in jazz and hip hop such as calypsos, gran jetes, shenes, potabosques, jazz squares. For ballet run through arabesques, torj jetes, pirouettes, fuettes, poterbureays, and all 5 positions. For ballet remember to allways have your stomach and butt sucked in, chin up and forward, and always remember to have eloquent posture. For tap make sure you always point your toes, and when ever your feet leave the ground in any style of dance toes should always be pointed. Hope this helps!

To prepare for ballet:
1) Walk on your toes in order to practice balance and finding you core
2) Go through all 5 positions
3) Practice turning out your feet and walking with turned out feet
To prepare for hip hop:
1) Roll your shoulders and hips often to loosen your joints
2) Do stretches often to loosen other joints so you can pop and lock
3) Listen to hip hop music to get into character faster
To prepare for tap:
1) Flex and pointe your feet repeatedly
2) Tap your toes frequently to gain flexibility in your feet muscles
3) When you walk, listen to a certain rhythm that repeats in order to become familiar with your personal foot structure. This also helps in telling the difference between different tap moves and counting how many sounds are in each step (very important)
To prepare for jazz:
1) Do your splits often in order to gain flexibility for leaps
2) Practice good posture (this is also helpful for ballet)
3) Do high kicks for stability and flexibility
To prepare for modern:
1) Practice in getting out of your comfort zone by moving in ways you dont regularly move
2) Read articles about dancers that shaped modern history
3) Since modern is a rebellion against ballet, try dancing opposite of what your ballet teacher would tell you. Example: flex your toes instead of pointing them
I would recommend practicing one style of dance per day. Being versatile is important and just because you are a good hip hopper, it dosent mean you are a good ballerina. For example, how would you practice turning out, pointed toes, and good posture for ballet the same day as you practice popping and locking for hip hop? Practice all styles, yet spread them out. That is what makes a well rounded, versatile dancer with good technique and a diligent personage. Hope this helps and good luck!!!
