Need a Great Idea? Feed Your Brain
Author: admin
A lot of great ideas happen when two or more other ideas collide to form something completely new.
Think of this like those old chemistry movies we used to watch in school. You had all of those atoms floating around and when two collided â bam! A chemical reaction. Maybe something new was created. Maybe something exploded. Or maybe it all fizzled out and nothing happened.
Well, a similar reaction is going on inside your brain or muse. Except instead of atoms floating around theyâre pieces of information or other ideas. As they drift about, they occasionally bump into each other. When that happens, you may get a new, third idea. Or a big explosion. Or absolutely nothing at all.
Now, if you have lots of atoms, or information and ideas, youâre going to get lots of reactions. Some will fail. Some will be so-so. And some will be hot â so hot, so full of energy, theyâll have the power to change the trajectory of a business. Or even a life.
The problem occurs when you donât have lots of random information and ideas. Fewer atoms mean fewer reactions. On top of that, you still have to weed through the invariable duds. So the odds of landing that one amazing idea drop considerably.
But not to worry â thereâs good news. You can increase your odds of getting those great ideas. Better yet, itâs fairly easy and painless. Below are three ways to get started.
1. Read, read and read some more.
The key is to keep it wide and shallow. What does that mean? Well, read lots and lots of different things, but keep it general. Read about sheep farming, finances, yoga, cooking, traveling, dog training, etc. But keep it general â donât read deeply. You can even skim if thatâs all you have time for.
Start by subscribing to a couple of different magazines and e-zines. General interest magazines are really good for this â Walt Disney used to read Readerâs Digest. Scatter them around the house â by the bed, the couch, even the bathroom. Iâd put a few in your car as well for those times when you have to wait for an appointment.
When you have a few moments, flip through them. Skim a few paragraphs. See what catches your eye.
You can also buy or rent audio books and CDs and listen while you exercise, drive, do the dishes, etc.
Whatever you do, DONâT read publications related to your industry. Thatâs for another time. This is brain-feeding time, not keeping up in your profession time. 2. Travel the world.
When you travel, you open yourself up to lots of new and exciting experiences. New sights, new sounds, new smells, new tastes, new textures. And they all have the ability to form a reaction with something else.
Donât have time to hop on a plane to India? Take a day trip to a town youâve never visited. Or, if you can only spare a few hours, seek out a park youâve never been to or a museum youâve been meaning to see or even that new cute little shop that just opened. You can always find somewhere new to visit no matter how long youâve lived in the same city. And if youâre truly desperate, try walking around your neighborhood on the opposite side of the street in the opposite direction you normally walk. (It can help jolt you out of rut.) 3. Open yourself up to new things.
Take the time to try new things. Meet people outside your normal circle of friends. Attend associations, nonprofits, hobby groups outside of the ones you usually go to. Listen to speakers on topics you know nothing about. Take a class at a community college about something outside your scope of knowledge. Or even have dinner at an ethnic restaurant youâve never tried.
Now Iâm not just talking about âtypicalâ creative things, like taking an art class or learning to belly dance. If youâre a creative professional, take a class on doing your own taxes or budgeting your finances or repairing your car. (Oooh, I bet all you creative folk felt a chill when I mentioned that.) The point is to really stretch yourself past your comfort zone. Make yourself uncomfortable. Itâs not only a great way to grow, but itâs a fabulous way to keep your muse fat and happy. And that helps keep the ideas flowing.
Creativity Exercises â Prepare the banquet
Over the next month, I want you do to at least one tactic from each of the above three techniques.
1. Read something you know nothing about. Even if you only spend five minutes skimming an article about quilting when the last time you tried to sew a button on a shirt you stabbed yourself with the needle and got blood all over the material.
2. Travel somewhere youâve never been before. Even if itâs an antique shop and the most antique piece of furniture in your house is a bookshelf your parents bought from Sears when you were a little kid.
3. Stretch yourself in a different and potentially scary way. Even if itâs attending one of those Home Depot gardening workshops despite every plant youâve tried to grow didnât and if your thumb was any blacker it would fall off.
You know how you work better when youâre not hungry, see how well your muse starts churning out ideas after a good meal.

read comments (2)Acapulco – an Ideal Vacation Destination
Author: admin
I have long desired to visit the famous Acapulco, ‘the city that never sleeps’, where the rich and famous have been visiting or residing since the 1950’s when Hollywood stars such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, and the Kennedy’s would come to visit and mingle amongst the glitzy atmosphere that seems to be automatic along the Pacific coastline of Acapulco Bay. The perfect tropical warm weather year round, blue clear skies almost every day, the stunning sands of Acapulco Bay, and the endless choice of top class hotels, restaurants, shopping and entertainment was what I finally got to experience when I vacationed here with my family.
The holiday was one I and my family will never forget! It was both relaxing and exhilarating all at the same time. We stayed in two hotels, one being Las Brisas Hotel, one of Acapulco’s more luxurious hotels which made me feel like a millionaire for the week, took care of every possible desire I may have had, and was the perfect Acapulco vacation Rental and destination experience. The second hotel was the oh-so elegant and stylish Fiesta Americana Hotel, which once again surpassed every expectation I had of how one should vacation in Acapulco.
There is so much to do in Acapulco, that it is virtually impossible to get bored, even with children. One of the highlights of our vacation in Acapulco was the La Quebrada cliff divers, which put on an amazing show of bravery and skill when they perform their daring dives off the natural cliffs into the waters below. Diving displays are usually daily at 1pm, 7pm, 8pm, 9pm, & 10pm (but check with your hotel for any variation to these times). Usually at least 3 divers will perform at each set performance time. There is a well placed public viewing deck where you can get a great view of the La Quebrada cliff divers. But I would suggest that, if you don’t have children with you, then take advantage of watching this amazing performance from the comfort of the Plaza Las Glorias Mirador Hotel. Mix the performance, a few cocktails, then a lunch or dinner on the hotel’s outdoor terrace, and it all makes for one very romantic outing.
For the children, there is an endless array of water sports for children of various ages along the beaches, and there are two beaches, Playa Caleta and Playa Caletilla, which are smaller and located away from the tourist hustle and bustle that the main Acapulco beaches seem to have. Here you will find very calm, more shallow waters, with much shade, perfect for the younger ones. A water park, called Centro Infantil CiCi, located on the main street Avenida Costera Miguel Aleman, or known locally as “The Costera” features water slides and toboggans, a wave pool, roller coaster, and dolphin and seal enclosures with shows as set times during the day. There is also Mundo Marina, an aquarium, located between Playa Caleta and Playa Caletilla, which has a variety of water slides, marine animal exhibits, restaurants and gift shops, which kept the children amused for some time. Also along The Costera, you will find a park with an array of carnival rides, roller skating rinks, skateboard ramps, and go karting tracks, to name but a few.
But if you would like to get away from the beach and water based activities, then I would suggest to visit the Fuerte de San Diego, which is an impressively restored 17 th Century fort built to protect the city against pirate attacks. Within the fort is the Museo de Acapulco, which offers an interesting look into the area’s historical significance, and Mexico ’s rich cultural and traditional past. It is easy to reach, keeps the children entertained and interested, and is a good place to escape the hot afternoon Acapulco weather.
Some of my personal highlights, apart from the stunning beaches to relax at with a good book, or the shopping along The Costera at the Centro Acapulco Real Estate, would have to be the extensive variety of water sports, and the restaurant and nightlife. Firstly the water sports available all along Acapulco Bay is impressive. I had always considered myself to be an active outdoors person, but didn’t realise the variety of water activities available. I had a go at the usual beach water activities such as banana boat rides, a trip on a glass bottom boat, a cruise around the Bay on a chartered sail boat, peddle boats, and snorkelling. But I decided to venture out and try parasailing, which was very exhilarating and the quality and professionalism of the staff gave me all the confidence I needed to attempt this. I also hired a wave runner, which I didn’t expect to be as enjoyable as it actually was, which explains why I went back the following day for another go. The hire place gave me excellent initial instructions and the equipment for hire was of very good quality. Two things I didn’t try were hiring a small sail boat, and scuba diving. Although my husband went scuba diving and obviously had a wonderful time, as he went back a few days later with our eldest child.
The nightlife is truly what Acapulco is about from sunset to sunrise! Whether you are after a quiet romantic dinner, lively cultural meal experience, or would prefer to spend a few hours in a bar with live music, or dance the entire night away in one of the many impressive nightclubs. The nightclubs, mostly located along The Costera, range from the norm to the sublime. Such as Fantasy, which is popular with the thirty-something crowd which offers a great Spanish feel in music and food, with some great views over the town and Bay, to Alebrije which is a huge nightclub which seats around 1,200 people, where a typical Friday or Saturday night begins with a slower pace and quickly builds into a disco display of music, lights, and a dance floor full of people covered in foam! Alebrije opens at 10.30pm and goes all night long till dawn. Two other popular nightclubs are Andromeda, a techno club popular with the 18-25 crown where the theme is set on what feels like a submarine with the entrance over a dramatic torch-lit moat. And Enigma gives an Egyptian feel, where the music is predominantly Spanish but does vary, and it also offers a great view of Acapulco Bay from the glass-walled dance floor. For some great bar and restaurant experiences to make your Acapulco vacation more memorable, The Costera offers bars with varied atmospheres, and restaurants with specialised cuisine menus. Keep in mind that the restaurants vary greatly in price, although you don’t need to spend a fortune to get great tasting food and great service!
For the males who may not be so interested in spending the majority of a 2 week vacation in Acapulco either in the shops or lazing on the sandy beaches, there is always golf, fishing or tennis to keep you occupied. My husband spent much time on the golf courses around Acapulco . There are 4 championship golf courses, all located south, near the airport and easily accessible to from the main tourist area. The courses at the Tres Vidas and the Mayan Palace were what impressed my husband the most. Their challenging fairways, impressive scenic views over the Pacific Ocean , and the quality of the clubhouse, hire equipment and amenities kept my husband busy for several days on the greens. The other 2 courses are the Acapulco Princess and Pierre Marques which adjoin each other.
And a game or two, or three, of tennis in Acapulco is a great way to spend some time away from the typical attractions of Acapulco . The modern facilities at the Mayan Palace complex (within the same complex as the golf course) offers 13 courts open to the public, with lessons available, and shower facilities. Within the tourist district, the Park Hotel offers very reasonable rates for those non-guests who would like a game of tennis. The Club de Tenis Panoramic is a small tennis club which offers players 2 neatly kept clay courts, but book in advance for this tennis club as it is quite popular.
All in all, our family vacation in Acapulco was a once in a lifetime experience. There was something for everyone, there was no boredom over the two weeks and the perfect mix of relaxation and excitement. Everything mentioned above and much, much more went in to creating some lasting memories for each and every family member. I can see why Acapulco attracts millions of tourists each year. I had fantasised about taking such a holiday as this, and I was not disappointed!

Losing weight doesnât have to entail taking mystery diet pills or trying the newest fad diet. There are plenty of natural ways to lose weight fast that are lots more fun than starving yourself and going without good food. Here are some healthy suggestions:
Swimming â Take a dip in the pool and do a couple of laps. You donât need to be the worldâs best or fastest swimmer. Swimming really works out your arms and stomach area. You get great aerobic benefits without having to over-exert yourself. Youâre simply gliding through the water at your own pace.
If you canât swim, you can still get the benefits of a water workout. Gently slide into the pool and hold onto the edge with your fingers. Slowly extend your body out and paddle your legs up and down. This gives you the same motion as swimming (except for the arm workout), without you having to go out of your comfort zone.
Fast walking â Walking is one of the best and most natural exercises you can do. We really take it for granted because we walk all the time. However, walking to stay fit is different than strolling from the kitchen to the living room couch.
In order to lose weight, you need to go on a brisk walk. Get your arms pumping and your legs moving. Walk as fast as you can without running out of breath â you should be able to speak and walk at the same time. Start by walking a couple of times around the block, then increase the distance of your walks after you feel an increase in stamina.
Drink water â Drink as much water as you can during the day. Water is a secret weight loss aid thatâs right in front of your face. Did you know that your body retains water if you are dehydrated?
You may be dehydrated and not even know it. By drinking several glasses of water a day, youâll actually allow your body to release all that water itâs been holding onto. If you have ever felt that bloated feeling, this is why. Your body is retaining too much water, which also adds to your weight.
Aerobic dancing â Join a gym and take an aerobic dance class or buy a DVD that teaches you how to do fun fitness dances. People who dance regularly often have great looking bodies, thatâs because dancing is really a first-class workout.
Even if you think you have two left feet, nobodyâs gonna see you practicing dance moves in the privacy of your home (except maybe family or roommates). There are lots of dance videos on the market. You can learn how to do ballet, hip hop dancing, rumba, traditional fast-stepping aerobic moves, etc.
Weight training â Tone up those flabby muscles and watch the fat melt off quickly. Picking up some light weights and learning to do a little weight training at home or in the gym is a great way to naturally lose weight. You wonât get those bulging muscles, youâll just tone and firm up muscles and have a more youthful appearance.
Eating healthy â This is a no brainer in a way, but still with all the fatty foods that tempt you on a daily basis, eating healthy is actually harder than it should be. If all you were exposed to in the supermarket was rows and rows of fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, lean meats and yogurt, youâd find it easy to eat healthy.
The reality is that you have to walk into that supermarket determined to put these things into your shopping cart. You also have to pass by lots of delicious cakes, fried foods, soda and chips. Make a list of healthy foods to pick up before you go shopping, then put each item in your cart before you go on to shop for other things.
Biking â Hop on a bike and ride around the neighborhood. If you donât live too far from work, think about biking instead of driving or taking public transportation. Biking is a great way to get an easy aerobic workout. It will also tone up your legs nicely.

Pilates Goes to College
Author: admin

Just a few years ago, Kim Gibilisco, a choreographer, dancer and Polestar- and Stott Pilatesâtrained instructor, was teaching private Pilates sessions in her Manhattan studio. Today, she is an Assistant Professor of Dance at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, and the woman responsible for bringing a Pilates mat certification program to the school. Here she discusses how she came to be SUâs Pilates Program Coordinator and where Pilates fits in the university setting.
PP: How did the idea of a collegiate Pilates program come about, and what did it take to convince school officials?
KG: When I accepted my position in the Dance Department at SU, my chairperson, Erica Helm, and I discussed the possibility of offering a Mat Teacher Training course to our students. I designed the curriculum in the summer of 2005 then applied for Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) approval as an Educational Member. Applying to the PMA was an important part of the process, as I wanted to be sure that our program was properly sanctioned. I also wanted to ensure that our graduates could apply for PMA membership and be accepted into Apparatus programs in the future if they wanted to pursue more. The Mat program was approved and we began running the program in Fall 2005. The program was embraced from the very beginning by our university.
PP: How did you design the curriculum and what are the requirements?
KG: I designed the curriculum specifically for a student population (ages 19-25) who may not have had any experience with the method. One semester of college level anatomy is required to enroll. Since our students are in a four-year program (versus typical weekend-based training seminars), I wanted to capitalize on the available time I had to teach the material. I determined that a two-semester sequence was the most effective way to teach the material to this population. Students must earn at least an 84% in the first semester to advance to the second semester.
The first semester entails 2 hour of Mat experiential and 1 hour of lecture per week. In the second semester, students take Mat once a week with me. Then students rotate in teaching the whole group a Mat class once a week. Following a student Mat class, participants offer feedback on the effectiveness and teaching style of the student instructor. In the second semester, the lectures focus on teaching methods and class design. Using their understanding of the Trilogy, the 6 Pilates Principles (control, centering, concentration, flowing movement, precision and breath) and the 5 Pilates Lab Principles (use of inhalation and exhalation, pelvic floor, restorative poses, visual gaze and neutral spine) students design a class with a theme or concept they want to address. Written and practical midterms and finals are also administered.
Using some of the Mat Teacher Training models I researched, I designed the curriculum to include lectures and practicums that I believe are important in becoming a well-rounded teacher of the method. For example, our students are tested in physical practicums where they must demonstrate their mastery of the 34 exercises as well as in teaching practicums where they must demonstrate their ability to teach confidently and effectively. I also wanted to offer students course work on the various props used in the Mat work, (e.g.: magic circle, foam roller and thera-bands and thera-ball) so that they did not need to attend continuing education courses outside of the university setting to develop their breadth of knowledge. In addition, I teach contra-indications for diabetes, orthopedic issues and pregnancy so that our graduates feel comfortable with teaching a variety of populations. What I stress the most is the importance of âknowing what you donât know and to teach ONLY what you know.â For example, if a client asks them about an orthopedic issue that is out of their scope of practice, they know to refer them to a medical professional. Our students are taught how to self-assess and where to look for more information if they are unclear.
PP: Are you the only instructor involved with the Pilates program?
KG: Yes, as per the PMA, all teachers must have at least 5 years of teaching experience to instruct teacher trainers.
PP: What type of students does the program attract?
KG: Up until 2007, we have had primarily dance majors enrolled in the program. However, this academic year our Music Theatre majors and staff have also enrolled and successfully completed the program. For the 2008-2009 academic year, we have dance majors, music theatre majors, SU alumni and community members enrolled.
PP: Are students who complete all the requirements considered certified Pilates instructors?
KG: Only the PMA can âcertifyâ teachers in the method. As an Educational Member of the PMA, our teacher trainers are given a certificate of completion with the SU and PMA logos on it.
PP: Is Pilates an actual major, and if not, how does it work into a studentâs graduation plan?
KG: Our Teacher Training Program is an elective course that can fulfill a dance elective requirement.
PP: How many students have been through the program, and are they actively teaching now?
KG: We have had 26 students complete the Mat Teacher Training course of which 14 students are actively teaching Pilates Mat.

Where to learn Old Time Sequence and New Vogue Dancing
Author: admin
The first time is always the hardest and even though private instruction is just that, private, group classes are not really that intimidating. Most people you’ll find in these sorts of groups are extremely encouraging and friendly. However if you’re really shy then private instruction is the way to go. With all the TV coverage it’s really got people saying I want to do that.
Sequence and New Vogue dancing is easy to learn. You start with easy ones and then progress to the more difficult amalgamations. Since the exposure of dance in the media dancing in all types and styles has really taken off. Classes have increased dramatically and people want more. There are over one hundred sequence dances and more are being created and published via the UK, finally reaching the Australian shores. Here in Australia we have tended to take on British dancing from our early origins and have taken their dance styles through to today. Sequence dancing has taken on the same rhythms from the ballroom such as Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha, Samba, Jive or Swing. Some of the sequences dances to name, just a few, Georgella Blues, Saunter Together, Glen Roy Foxtrot, Georgella Blues, Mayfair Quickstep, Melody Foxtrot, Ragtime Swing, Rumba One.
There are many places around Australia to learn all these dances, one particular non profit organization is the Ulladulla District Dance Group Inc. This organization has been going now for more than 30 years in the Ulladulla south coast NSW area. They have been successful in promoting the best and most attended sequence ball (held in last May) in NSW and on the south coast. Many couples drive long distances to enjoy this great night out and spend the weekend in this beautiful town and catch up with all their friends from Canberra, Sydney and even Bega. Ulladullla is a famous fishing town it’s beautiful harbour and friendly people make it a great get away for dancers to visit for the weekend after they dance their feet off at this fabulous dance ball.
Other activities include a Friday night class before the big event, this gives many people time to chat up on there busy lives before the big night. The attendance has been stronger than ever since it started more than 10 years ago, with great music from a great band and organised with the best leadup work, which is why so many people to repeatedly book every year.
You can scout around in all cities for dance studios that teach these styles, your local area may have a studio. They may also include other styles of dance and this is quite common because of the variety people demand. Every studio may offer different styles so it’s best to contact them before making any commitments, each business will have different priced dance programs. Enjoy!

Dancing to the music is a great idea in shape and staying healthy. Done regularly, it may be a great form of exercise, it burn calories, improves coordination, builds endurance and most important, it is fun. Beyond that, dancing to the music is also less likely to be dull in comparison with other activities, because there are always new steps to learn and the music is motivation.
Most health clubs offer some types of dance exercise program or class. Sample a few types of classes to your positive style, and music teacher. Classes with a start and end dates are best if you want to be on equal level with other student. Do not expect as a pro in the first session. Part of the fun is learning new steps and be challenged to your body in new, unknown and possible ways.
Approach each class with with a positive image of the spirit and know that you improve your health and pleasure, not with each other to win a dance contest or as the best in the room. Some lessons are focused around the couples’ dances, as the ballroom. These lessons are a perfect opportunity with your boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse. If you do not have someone to the class with you, do not worry. Many classes will surprise you with a different partner every week. And that is an excellent way to meet new people.
You will probably have a favorite style of dancing to the music but do not forget to mix it up. A ballet class is to work your body other than hip-hop, Irish or jazz dance class, and disable the classes is the best way to the health benefits, while reducing the risk of damage from overuse same muscle groups.
Some dancing to the music lesson will focus on building the music stamina and strength, but dancing is usually heart. So extra strength in your week, so your muscles get stronger and healthy body.
If you are unable to join the classes, then you buy a volume of video CDs to learn a number of major steps. With steps to move guide, who can quickly learn the joy of dancing to the music tune. It will be fun and health until the next dance music. An online on the internet, you may find useful volume guide CDs.
