Dance Classes For Kids: The Gift that Keeps On Giving

When Ann Jenkins was told that her daughter Amy was having trouble interacting with the other kids in her kindergarten class, she was at a loss for words. You see, Amy had always been a little shy around other kids, but after she "warmed up" she was usually fine. Why was kindergarten class any different? Amy’s teacher told Ann that she felt Amy lacked self-confidence and that the other kids recognized this and picked on her. When Ann asked the teacher what to do, she was surprised at her response: "Enroll Amy in dance lessons".
Initially shocked that dance could help her daughter psychologically, Ann started to do some research. Here’s what she found out about the benefits of dance for children:
- Teaches kids an exciting new way to move their bodies in entertaining and creative ways.
- Introduces kids to exercise that is fun to do, early in life, promoting a life-long commitment to fitness.
- Promotes self-discipline.
- Improves self-esteem and builds self-confidence.
- Improves flexibility, coordination and memory.
- Builds strength and stamina.
- Gives children a sense of grace.
- Helps children succeed in other sports and in the classroom.
There are almost as many kinds of dance classes out there are there are kids. Like adults, kids just have to find their niche. The Bea Hive Dance Studio in Garden Grove, California, caters to children of all ages, from toddlers to teens. I am looking for beginner dance classes (jazz or hip-hop, preferably) for adults in the Jacksonville area, but all I can find are ballroom dancing lessons. Any idea where I can find what I’m looking for?
I can’t imagine a YMCA or a YWCA not offering them. Try calling there.

What should I eat/do before a full day of intense dance classes?
What should I eat before a full day of intense dance classes?
I am going to be going to a dance clinic and I will be participating in intense dance classes all day. What foods should I eat that morning (or the previous night) to healthfully prepare for intense classes. I don’t want to get dehydrated, dizzy, hungry, or sick during the day!
Also, is there anything you would recommend doing prior to the dance classes to prepare– anything!?
Eat carbs and proteins the night before to gear you up for your long day (I suggest a whole grain spaghetti with meatballs, a green vegetable or salad, and a serving of yoghurt and fruit for dessert).
For breakfast, you want protein and carbs. Jumpstart your day with a yoghurt and banana if you don’t have time for anything else, but you’ll have a real meal in an ideal situation. Fried egg, lettuce, tomato, and cheese in an english muffin go well for a quick breakfast with all your food groups. You can also make a breakfast wrap. Scrambled eggs with cheese, green onion, peppers, salsa, sour cream, a meat of your choosing. Or, if you’re worried about something too big, have peanut butter on toast or a bagel, a banana, some yoghurt, and a handful of trail mix. Don’t eat anything too heavy or greasy, it won’t sit well.
Bananas pack more energy than coffee, and contain potassium that’ll help with your muscle aches. Eat them as a snack between classes. Also snack on raisins, fresh fruits, yoghurts, trail mixes, cheeses and crackers.
Drink water before you go to class. Try to have at least a big water bottle full between waking up and going to classes. Also keep your bottle full during the day, and sip on it constantly.
If you’re prone to get an upset stomach when you’re stressed or nervous, have some pepto bismol. I can’t keep anything down before a show, and this works wonders.
Warm up before you go, too. Take about 40 minutes to get relaxed and limbered up. Put your iPod on and go for a brisk walk for a few minutes to wind down, and then stretch everything gently. Try to loosen up your joints and work on your turn out. Yoga and pilates moves are good for this.
Also, make sure you have ibuprofen, bandaids, extra water, hair spray, bobby pins, elastics, safety pins and a granola bar in your bag ‘just incase’. Don’t forget tampons and spare change, you never know if or when you’ll need them.
Try to put everything in one bag, and put your name on it. It’s easy to lose things when you’re throwing shoes all over. Keep it contained!
Wear something you’re comfortable in and can move in (unless there is a dress code). Try to avoid sports bras instead of shirts, and try to avoid cleavage. It’s distracting to your other dancers.
Dress in layers! Sweater, sweat pants, and legwarmers for your walk, leg warmers and a wrap for your stretching, and whatever you choose to dance in underneath for your actual classes. You’ll want something cool, you’ll get sweaty as you dance.
Don’t stress it too much, this isn’t an audition. You’re there to have fun, and they throw things at you very quickly. If you don’t get it, don’t sweat it.
Good luck!
