FILM REVIEW

KRRISH BEATS SUPERMAN HOLLOW

SUDHAKAR NATARAJAN

DEPUTY COMMANDANT

INDO TIBETAN BORDER POLICE

For time immemorial, since my childhood, the inferiority of Bollywood has been a part of my psyche due to a naturally conditioned response arising out of the fact that many of our films were a pale copy of Holllywood flicks, where entire story line and scene by scene mimicry was resorted to by our Indian Films. The role played by the film critiques was not insubstantial in running down the products churned out by out Bollywood factory ,that over the years has been drilled into the very core of our national consciousness.

My long held beliefs and hang-ups on the second-class status of our masala pot-boilers was pleasantly blown to smithereens when I took my parents, wife and daughter for a back-to-back movie outing to Fun Republic, when we saw Krrish and Superman on two consecutive days. Krrish was seen first, followed by Hollywood’s Superman. Krrish was the culmination of a super-hero that I had always dreamt of as a boy. The only desi superhero for me was the monkey-God Hanuman, whose stories my grandmother had told me that was further enhanced by the very pictorial Amar Chitra Katha Comics. Other than that Dharmendra( in the movie Dharam-Veer ,Sholay and the lamentable Teesri Ankh) was one of the contenders for a superhero for me during my childhood, who came a poor seventh after Phantom, Tarzan, Mandrake, Superman, Spiderman and Batman. I had been pining for a Indian super-idol since the days of yore. Seeing Hritik Roshan as Krrish brought satiated all the unfulfilled desires to have a cent percent Hindustani Hero. The first shot of Krrish when he races with a stallion was a master-piece in choreography, that took the breath away. I feel a lot of research would have gone into designing the costume for Krrish, since it is non-esoteric and every kid on the street can identify with the character, unlike the Superman who wears an costume with his chaddi worn outside his pants and stops a wing-less and rudderless Airbus with 400 passengers crashing onto the baseball field with his very bare hands and ends it with a corny line “hi, I am Superman”. If Rakesh Roshan has not made Krrish, we Indians would have been forced to swallow Hollywood superheroes who have absolutely no bearing with our ethos and aspirations. Superman, was seen in the Gold Class paying Rs 110/- per head whereas for Krrish we were forced to watch it in the Bronze Class shelling out only Rs 60/- per head, due other classes being sold out. But believe you me, Krrish seen on a cheaper ticket with the screen looming in front of our eyes was much more enjoyable that Superman seen from the elite seats. Our visual hardships could not succeed in taking off the sheen form Krrish. Superman was a pale shadow of the previous Superman Movies starring Christopher Reeves since he was a much better hero than the present bloke who sleep-walked through his Superman role. Our Priyanka Chopra was cut above the frigid girlfriend of Superman who was as dry as a Indian rusk and had got knocked up by her office colleague during the absence to the costumed Hollywood superhero. Krrish could sing and dance but can you imagine Superman breaking into a jig? Krrish had a storyline that was riveting and Nassiruddin Shah as the bad guy was leagues ahead of the villain in Superman. Scene for Scene, stunt for stunt, Krrish was indeed a superior hero to the caped Superman. The scene when Krrish rescues a small child form a burning circus tent has a better emotional quotient than all the damsels in distress saved by Superman. Finally even the international audience is waking up to the potential of the Indian Superhero. Move over pale-faced caped Hollywood Superman, our very own son-of the-soil bronze superhero Krrish has arrived.

We all know kids love to play whenever they get the chance. Even some adults take time to play now and then. With touchpad keyboards, kids are discovering a new way to play. Here are some benefits for kids and their caretakers who use touchpad keyboards:

“It’s like my fingers are dancing!” said Charla, age eight. On her first day of class at Mountain View Elementary school, she gravitated towards the computer at her desk place. She had never seen a computer with a touchpad keyboard before, but she jumped right in and began to experiment with how to use it. Before her teacher had a chance to explain how the touchpad keyboard functions, Charla had already grasped the concept and was adeptly using the touchpad keyboard to download music on to her iPod. So quick is the learning curve of the touchpad keyboard for kids.

While Charla felt her fingers were dancing, she did not know that her brain was also stretching into new vistas of creativity. Studies have shown that children who use touchpad keyboards have higher levels of creative expression, due to the dancing/drawing motion of the fingers. The fluid movement is similar to painting, which encourages the brain to think in non-linear, abstract formation. Children who use touchpad keyboards are more flexible by nature, more creative, and more spontaneous than their classmate counterparts who use traditional keyboards.

Little Charla may think touchpad keyboards are all about fun, as the school hours speed away, but her teacher knows something else about them. They are easier to clean than a traditional mouse. Kids are notoriously messy. Crumbs seem to travel with them in a trail that could reach around the world. Teachers know that despite having the entire class wash their hands before computer work, inevitably for every twenty kids at least three manage to get dirt or crumbs stuck in their computer mouse. With the touchpad keyboard, those crumbs are easily visible and simply cleaned. With the traditional rolling ball mouse, crumbs get stuck up inside and are difficult, if not impossible, to remove. Teachers are saving hours of cleaning time with touchpad keyboards.

Whenever school funding is cut, classrooms get fuller. With thirty kids to watch over, Charla’s teacher must get creative about making space for all of thirty kids within a compact room. Desks are crammed in and make for only a 1.5-foot aisle. The kids’ elbows are hitting each other. Luckily, the touchpad keyboards save some space. Eliminating the traditional mouse means that each child has an additional ten inches of space. This efficiency is helping little Charla and other kids to concentrate better and understand the concept of “personal space.”

Well-informed adults are taking advantage of touchpad keyboards in the home, too. American kids typically spend one to two hours on the computer after school, and sometimes more. Parents with touchpad keyboards are noticing that they are saving much time by not digging out dirt stuck inside a traditional mouse. With a quick swipe of the touchpad keyboard, all the grime is gone.

Studies linking touchpad keyboards to creativity are just beginning to make waves in the parent community. Parents and teachers are taking advantage of the cleanliness, efficiency, and creative effect that touchpad keyboards have. Let your kids join the dance of touchpad keyboards. It is good for them and you.

When photographers are hired to do a wedding, these professionals know what it takes to get the right shot. These people may not always tell the client to strike a pose and shoot but wait patiently to be able to catch that memorable shot.

There are a lot of great shots that can be taken during a wedding. Here are a few basic styles and techniques for those who also want to capture the event using a digital camera.

1. The individual should take these pictures with a good background or in a not so crowded place so the attention will focus on the newly weds or those who are the intended targets in the shot.

2. If there is a nice background in the back and it is hard to get both, the photographer should shoot the couple from shoulder up. Everyone will be happy and pleased when the pictures come out.

3. If some of the guests are wearing classes, these people can be advised to stand sideways or tilt the head down a little to avoid the reflection that usually occurs when the flash is used.

4. The individual should zoom in or out if there are only two or a group of people in the picture. This will also catch everyone in the shot instead of only getting half of person’s body when the print comes out. This will be embarrassing so the image has to be reviewed at once and deleted so another one can be taken.

5. Proper lighting must be observed at all times. The person must not shoot the couple or the gusts against the light because only a dark image will appear after the picture has been taken.

6. The photographer should also get some stolen moment shots. This should be done when the husband or wife is doing something else or is not looking. This is the trademark of many professionals that is done during the ceremony or the reception.

People will enjoy shots such as the cutting of the cake, the toast and the first kiss or dance. The pictures taken can’t be done again so the individual must be alert and present to get these images on camera.

Photography is truly an art. The person must practice the basics and learn from others to be able to do well in a wedding.

Depression disproportionately affects the elderly. Unfortunately many times the signs of depression can be confused with signs of aging.  In order to properly diagnose and treat depression in the elderly, individuals, their care takers and health care providers need to be vigilant in looking for the signs and symptoms. Depression in the elderly can be debilitating and effect other areas of health. Determining if depression is involved is an important part of the health screening process.

Warning Signs of Depression

When dealing with the elderly and depression, some detective work is often needed.  It is important that the elderly and their caretakers know the signs and symptoms of depression. As the elderly tend to have a lot of confounding factors coming into play at the same time which affect their health, symptoms of depression are easily masked as signs of aging. Symptoms of depression vary from person to person.  Some common signs are:

  • Tiredness and lack of energy
  • Difficulty focusing, remembering and staying on task
  • Irritability
  • Feelings of guilt, emptiness or helplessness
  • Sleeping too much or insomnia
  • Eating more or less than normal
  • Loss of interest in activities that were enjoyed before
  • Crying for long periods of time
  • Thoughts of suicide

While these are only a few of the possible symptoms, one can readily see how depression can easily be mistaken for signs of aging, precisely because these symptoms are so prevalent among the elderly. Mental and physical sickness and “old age” are often considered to be one in the same. According to the Rotterdam Scan Study, people with an early onset of depression had an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease. The study also found that the depression symptoms did not have to be obvious to run this risk.[i] This study highlights the fact that early detection and treatment of depression in the older population is vital in the fight to lower the risk of Alzheimer Disease. Much more research is being done to investigate the link between the two. It is clear however, that the two are linked.

What You Can Do to Improve Quality of Life

One thing is certain:  the earlier depression is diagnosed and treated, the greater the chance a person will recover and regain a healthy lifestyle. There are many treatments available for depression. Once diagnosed a referral should be made to a geriatric psychiatrist. This is a specialist who is trained to treat depression in the older population. The treatment can vary from things as simple as talk therapy, diet changes and exercise to medication. A combination of all these methods is often used.

It should be understood that the elderly deal with problems that younger generations do not. They are often dealing with deaths of loved ones, illness and retirement. They may suffer financial burdens, not to mention a sense of loss of control over their lives. These may be issues they have never dealt with previously and will need to learn new methods to deal with them emotionally.

Diet is an important factor in dealing with depression in the elderly. Older people may not be eating like they should. They may be living alone or on a limited income. Their diets should be carefully analyzed. While there is no one food that will “cure” depression, as the saying goes, we are what we eat, and food does often affect how we feel. Plenty of whole fresh fruits and vegetables are essential. These will provide essential vitamins and minerals as well as antioxidants. Carbohydrates in small amounts can have a calming effect. Whole grains are especially important for heart and digestive issues. Good sources of protein, especially those with Omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish and legumes, are recommended.

Exercise is an excellent way to make anyone feel better. During exercise, the brain releases a neurotransmitter called serotonin as well as endorphins. These are the body’s natural “feel good” chemicals. They help a person sleep better, stabilize the mood and even affect appetite and cell generation.

Exercise does not have to be an intense workout at the gym. It can be something as simple as a brisk walk through the park for 10 to 15 minutes. Elderly people could be encouraged to take a dance class or a fitness class with other seniors. This will provide exercise and also give them needed social interaction.

Getting the elderly population involved socially is also an essential part of depression treatment and prevention. Many elderly people withdraw. They may have experienced the loss of a loved one or friends and feel they are alone. Getting them back out in the community and involved in activities that they find enjoyable is helpful.

As you can see, communication and education are vital in detection of depression in the elderly. If you believe an older person you care about may be suffering from depression, bring it to the attention of a health professional. Effective treatment may make a significant improvement in the elder person’s overall health.
