Ive been taking dance at school for the past 2 years and I love it. My teacher says Im really good, and that i have potential to be great. I never took dance when i was little but i took gymnastics. I would like to take either ballet, jazz, or contemporary. Is there a beginning class for a 17 year old. I live near Joliet, IL! Suburb of Chicago!

Go on to google then enter "dance studios (your zip code)" then you’ll see a list of about 5 dance studios that are nearest to your location. Check out their websites and see if they have any beginning classes in the styles you like. Some may list the classes as beginning teen, beginning adult, or beginning teen/adult. At your age of 17, I think you would feel comfortable in any of these classes.

However, you better hurry up! Most dance studios have already started their fall quarter and will be closing registration soon. You probably have about a two week window until registration closes and then you would have to wait until January for registration to open again.

Good luck with your search. You will absolutely love dance!

Dusty Roads & Faded Signs

If poetry was basketball, Ryan Clark’s humor would be a flawless ankle breaking crossover move. If you’ve heard his all-star work you already know ‘he’s got game ‘ This book is well worth the price of admission.” – Frank X Walker, author of Affrilachia and Buffalo Dance ***** “I have to pee. Bad.” So begins “American Standard,” a poem about a teenage boy who wants to grow up, but isn’t quite ready. Welcome to Ryan Clark’s world. Known for his sly wit and entertaining journalistic style, Clark fills his first book of poetry with a mixture of gut-busting humor, tear-jerking anecdotes and expertly crafted historical fiction. Follow Clark as he spins tall tales about the Devil, Exorcists and his own young daughter. Read his rants about negative people, teenagers who text too much, and the information that baby classes conveniently do not teach. But pay attention as Clark gets serious too. He devotes one section of the book to the most controversial political scandal of our time. Poems are told from, among other perspectives, that of a stained dress, an eager microphone, and an idealistic young campaign volunteer. Clark’s first book of poetry is sure to be remembered.

I am currently takin ballet, and I know that is required. But I also want to do hip hop or jazz! Do u think that would be useful? I have a year till high school so I need as much help with classes so that I can make the dance team. Helppp?!?!

Jazz will deeeffinatly be more helpfull i’m thinking, if you’re required to do ballet. it will really help with your flexibility and ability to make things sharper.

My boyfriend and I are taking a swing and social dance class and I’m not sure how to dress for it. I thought I should wear leggings with sneakers but I’m not sure if you’re supposed to dress up or not.

It depends on the place you’re taking it. I would ask or dress somewhere in the middle to be safe. Where I do class we all come in whatever we’re wearing when we arrive, or clothes that we pick specifically to be comfortable at dance, but when we have a dance at the studio everyone dresses really nice. Everyplace and studio is different.

My personal preferences:
– Loose clothing: a light, looser, soft t-shirt and gauchos are my favorite for practice. My gauchos aren’t the tight stretchy stuff (those would get hot – ick), they are like dress pants on the top but loose, free flowing on the bottom.
- Loose skirts (down to the knee with sport shorts underneath) are also nice – I always wear them for actual dances.

Don’t wear shorts or mini skirts or super tight clothing. Make sure any pants are off the floor and don’t have rips on the bottom that could catch.

Wear good dance shoes! A good dance shoe for a beginning girl would be:
- 2in heel
- Flared heel – no stilettos – at least 1/2 on bottom
- Smooth bottom (one of the rare cases that you WANT to slide).
- Hard arch but flexible toe (you should be able to bend the toe back towards the arch)
- Good solid closures (no stretchy straps and no open backed shoes. Make sure it straps all the way around with as little wiggle room as possible).

Good shoes will make a big difference. You need to have your arch supported well but the ball of your foot needs to be able to move easily and make definite contact with the floor.

Hope that helps and may you enjoy Ballroom as much as I do!
